Behavioral Activation

Behavioral Activation (BA) is a brief, structured therapy for depression in which clients schedule rewarding activities to break the cycle of withdrawal and low mood. Multiple randomized trials show BA is as effective as full CBT for major depression, often in fewer sessions.

BA assumes depression is maintained by the absence of positive reinforcement, not only by negative thoughts. Treatment uses activity monitoring, values-based scheduling, and graded task assignments. BA is widely delivered in primary care and stepped-care models.
