Executive Function

Executive function is the set of mental skills — working memory, flexible thinking, and self-control — that we use to plan, focus, remember instructions, and manage multiple tasks. ADHD and many anxiety presentations involve executive function differences, not motivation problems.

Executive function develops gradually until the mid-20s. It can be supported through environmental scaffolding, externalized systems, body-doubling, and CBT for ADHD. Adults with executive function differences benefit more from structure than from motivation interventions.
