Complicated Grief (Prolonged Grief Disorder)

Prolonged Grief Disorder is a clinical condition in which intense yearning, identity disruption, and avoidance persist beyond a year after the death and significantly impair functioning. It was added to the DSM-5-TR in March 2022.

About 7 to 10% of bereaved adults develop prolonged grief disorder. Risk increases after sudden, violent, or stigmatized losses. Complicated Grief Therapy, developed by Dr. Katherine Shear, has the strongest evidence base and typically runs 16 sessions.
