Psychodynamic Therapy

Psychodynamic therapy is an in-depth talk therapy that focuses on how unconscious patterns, early relationships, and the therapeutic relationship itself shape current symptoms. It is generally longer-term than CBT and is well-suited to clients seeking insight as well as symptom relief.

Modern psychodynamic therapy is shorter and more structured than classical psychoanalysis. A 2010 meta-analysis by Dr. Jonathan Shedler showed effect sizes comparable to other evidence-based therapies, with gains that often grow after treatment ends.
